Police said the fire had been set and that a man had been arrested in the hotel lobby. Officers identified the arrested man as Thomas Moran, 31, of Boston. At least three people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, authorities said.
Hotel owner Donald Saunders said the fire was limited to the fourth floor, which contains conference rooms, but that smoke had caused damage throughout the 14-story hotel. The fire was reported at 6:17 a.m. and was contained within 30 minutes. Saunders estimated damages to the fourth floor Uranium mine to be shut down The Palangana uranium mine near Benavides will be shut down in 1980, Union Carbide Corporation's metals division announced today. The mine employs 105 persons, the company said.
Company officials said uranium prices, currently at $42 to 43 per pound were not enough to continue operating the "in-situ mine operation. "In-situ is a process in which the uranium is dissolved in a flood of water and pumped back to the surface for processing. Company operations manager Paul Willmott said the mine will shut down during the first half of 1980. and a restoration program will be begun as soon as production is completed. Willmott said hourly employees will be released over a phased shutdown of production starting in January, until about 30 remain at the end of June.

(AP) The $250,000, rocket-powered car of Ken "Mad Canadian' Carter ended up in the St. Lawrence River today, authorities said, apparently the result of his long -promised attempt to jump a mile across the river from Canada to an American island. Initial reports from the Ontario Provincial Police said only that the car landed in the river just off the takeoff ramp at Morrisburg, Ont.
